binding light
neon, steel
como moscas a una luz, like flys to a light
we progressively endanger a once treacherous globe
a gradient towards a declivity
20,000 volts - lightning
noble gas extracted from air
the lights are binding
a choke hold
a snare
a dedication
a incantative reuse - disposed
abandonded craft - soulless imitation
towards existence
Binding Light is the first work in the series “Acero y Neon: Fire and Air Experiments 00.”
In this series Santiago Burelli finds, rearranges, and repurposes vintage and discarded neon signs to create new assemblages of neon light with revitalized symbolic vocabulary. By “remixing” and utilizing neon light, Burelli brings attention to the dying craft of neon production which is currently being rampantly replaced by LED production. Burelli hopes to also highlight the extractivist culture necessary to create neon. Noble gas extraction as well as mercury use in neon production demonstrate the complex and often paradoxical environments needed in order to produce art.
“Binding LIght” plays with the commonly used image of flys drawn to and sorched by UV light traps. Similarly, “Binding Light” draws the attention of the audience and its dim - to - bright gradient hints at the problematics within 21st century accelerationism. As technology, extractivism, industrialization, and consumerism all continue to being larger, faster, and increasingly dangerous, many of us are simply stunned, powerless, and incapable of taking necessary action.
